Bent Prop Award

1986 Dobson Family
Boat was double moored, front and rear. The wind changed leaving the boat moored stern into the wind. The sea slopped over into the engine well with the boat filling up via the cable port until the boat sank at is mooring.

1987 Watts Family
Dropping boat on the hard at the Naval Point ramp.

1988 W Burgess
Parking boat too far up on a beach.

1989 P Bu Bear
Peter had a Haines 198. He left it on a mooring at Te Mahia - when he woke up in the morning it was not there. It was found later high and dry on a nearby beach. Foul play was thought to be involved.

1990 K Dixon
Ran out of fuel.

1991 A Frame
Alan and Liz had just purchased a new Contra and had a “fridge” (Chrysler). On a boating day at Quail Island, went over the reef (on the starboard side when leaving the ski lane) taking out the whole bottom end. Result - a new Yamaha!

1992 D Tong
Dave had not long purchased a Haines Hunter v17L. Prior to Dave and Jenny purchasing their boat it had been “repaired”. The repair became unstuck while at sea, thus filling the boat with water. Dave was able to return to Naval Point where he literally drove it up on the ramp!

1993 D Magill
Dave led a new member (John and Sue Clarke #117) over Shag Reef. Dave passed over the reef ok but John and Sue’s skeg just touched the reef (no major damage sustained).

1994 K Jory
Kevin had just overhauled his engine and replaced the steering cable at the same time. On going out to run in when Kevin went to take off when he turned to go starboard he went to port! The steering cable had been put in the wrong way.

1995 A Urquart
1995 was the COBC’s 21st, as no one did anything wrong (or would admit to any incident) it was felt it should be presented to the instigator of this trophy!

1996 D Magill
Dave has the honour to date for getting this award twice. This time Dave got it for leaving the bung out when at Lake Pearson. To add insult to injury, Kerry said there was a programme on TV the day before about boating and the subject of forgetting to put the bung in was mentioned, to which Dave said to Kerry this would never happen to him. Wrong!

1997 G Jory
Graeme has the honour this year due to misinforming everyone of the rocks on the way to Lake Aviemore at Easter. The day before the organised event Graeme was skiing at Loch Laird and hit a rock just outside of Loch Laird and took a bit out of the skeg. Next day was an organised event to Lake Aviemore and Graeme’s advice was to keep right when going up the river. To his surprise there was more than one rock and two boats lost bits off their skeg as well.

1998 J McBryde
Jim has the honour this year. At the Xmas picnic he was taking his son for a ski and went over the “Alan Frame reef”. Result – a new bottom leg required.

1999 R McCulloch
Richard has the honour in our 25th anniversary year. On retrieving his boat (Wicked Lady) at the end of the Proscreen fishing competition, Richard was seen to be trying to improve the drainage of the Naval Point ramp with the skeg. However he blames his crew but as we know the captain is always responsible.

2000 S Boot
Stephen tried to use his outboard as an anchor winch when fishing up at Motunau. He had problems lifting his anchor so undid it with a float to come round and try and pull from a different direction. In doing this manoeuvre Stephen ran over the rope.

2001 K Jory
Kevin was the lucky recipient this year. Another steering problem – Kevin put his son’s (Graeme) boat “Chocablock” up on the hard while trying to go around the island on Lake Creighton. The hull required repairs but the motor (a new 130hp Johnson) sustained no damage.

2002 J Waller
John was fitting a new bilge pump with a float switch and drilled the holes of which one went straight through the hull.

2003 R Hunt
Ross damaged lower unit after running over a rock at Easter in the Marlborough Sounds.

2004 C McCulloch
The first woman to be awarded this trophy. Chris bent all three blades of the propeller while retrieving “Renegade” on the first day at Otematata at Sailors Cutting.

2005 G Wilcock
Glenn had gone so close on a number of previous years only to be pipped at the post by a contribution slightly more deserving. The history of misfortune includes dumping the Club Captain into hypothermia inducing water off the kneeboard by blowing the engine on the boat; wedging the bowrail under the wharf at Duvauchelles; blocking the entire ramp at Lake Brunner with a flat battery requiring another member to tow the stricken vessel from the ramp; then there was the 3 hours wait at Wreck Bay for the tide to refloat the boat; leaving the gas canister disconnected from the crews’ life jacket. There have been the numerous occasions when this member has demonstrated his true petrol head tendencies such as the Lyttelton to Akaroa, the fuel meter on a Yamaha 150 reaching its limit at 70 litres per hour - these things can go fast when you get enough fuel into them.

2006 K Head
Ran aground at Otematata when watching the towed skier instead of where he was going, despite the loud whistling and shouting from the crowed on the nearby beach (what was the observer doing?).

2007 M Faid
Matthew was in a hurry to get to the airport after a days skiing at Quail Island – hence the chopped up propeller on the Naval Point ramp.

2008 R Ball
While launching his boat at Purau the boat got hit by a large easterly swell and bashed it into the piles of the boat ramp splitting the fibreglass around the back of the boat.

2009 T Leonard
Hit a rock and bent the drive shaft a bit. The bottom leg had to be stripped down, shaft straightened, new seals etc. Many hundreds of dollars for repairs.

2010 C Faid
While attempting to tow 8 club teenagers with her 150hp Johnson motor, her ski pole snapped just as the skiers were all coming out of the water. This was a reinforced ski pole which was altered after their previous ski pole was bent while towing a nose diving lake snake. It is only fitting that she is the first recipient of this new award.

2011 Greg Skene
Greg talked Ryan Purvis into teaching a friends son how to water ski in Gregs nice new boat. In undertaking the above procedure Ryan was driving the boat round in a little bay along way out from the edge when all of a sudden
BANG!!! What was that you might ask? Yes Ryan had hit the bottom. On checking afterwards all four blades on the propellor were bent. A stainless propellor to boot. And the skeg was bent. Plus a few small things like a bent drive shaft, stiff steering, gel coat missing from the hull. Ryan was nearly sick from worry. That’s what you have insurance for. Don’t worry Hilary did an almost impressive job, see the “Bent Ski Pole 2011”.
